We’re taking a break from talking about business strategies and marketing campaigns to talk about community outreach for small businesses. It’s important to get out from behind your desk or counter and meet the people who are supporting your local business by shopping with you or signing up for your services.

Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. In fact, they make up 99.9% of businesses in America. But small businesses are able to thrive in their communities with the help of the same communities in which they operate. And sometimes, it’s important to give back.

Here’s how:

Sponsor a team

Some community outreach as a small business involves sponsoring sports teams. Local little leagues, high school competitive teams and more need the fundraising to pay for out-of-town or out-of-state tournaments and championships. Show that you care about the youth in your community by sponsoring a team or two. And hey, sometimes they even put your logo on the back of their shirts.

Participate in a local festival

Depending on your industry, paying for a vendor spot at a festival not only supports the community, but lets you meet some of the interesting people you would have otherwise not have met. Maybe you end up handing your business card to a potential client or someone in the local government is looking for a contractor for an upcoming public works project. If all else fails, at least you had fun and met more town residents.

Donate to a local charity

One of the easiest ways to do community outreach as a small business is simply donating to a local charity for an upcoming event. Maybe that charity is holding a fundraising gala and you can buy a table then attend. This is a great way to foster meaningful connections with those in your community who truly need your help and your business can provide that help.

Don’t stop doing small business outreach

Community outreach as a local business isn’t a one-and-done type of deal. It’s important to continue cultivating meaningful relationships with your community as much as you can. Not only is it important for the health of your town, but when people can put your face to the name of the business, you’ll find that customer loyalty and brand awareness increase.
