Protecting Your Website from Hackers

Monday Morning Rocketfuel

Lock ‘n load, people. It’s Monday! 🚀 Today, we’re going after those malicious bad actors trying to infect your website and steal your customer’s information.

Protect Your Website from Hackers

My message for companies that think they haven’t been attacked is: “You’re not looking hard enough”.
– James Snook

If a window breaks on the front of your house, it’s safe to say there’s a trip to Lowe’s happing today.

But, what about the back of the house? Say, the mudroom window.

Skilled thieves understand that most people are far more concerned about the aesthetic things they can see than the security risks they can’t.

Thieves that steal from your website visitors are no different.

65 percent of cyber-attacks are aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. But, web agencies are much more likely to get a call about a broken image on the homepage.

We’ve seen our share of hacked websites and it’s never pretty. Malicious code injected to a site can steal customer info, redirect to porn sites, or infect your visitors with viruses. Sometimes all three.

Small business websites are especially vulnerable because:

  1. They believe they’re too small to be worth attacking,
  2. They fail to install security plugins, and
  3. They ignore website software updates.

Your website is like any other app or software installed on your computer. Failing to keep that software up to date is like throwing a brick through your back window. As soon as one bad guy notices, you can expect a flood of attacks.

But, how often do these attacks actually take place? Our security suite catches hundreds of hacking attempts per week — on each website.

The bad guys are trying to get in. Patch that window to make sure they can’t.

Challenge

This week, check to make sure your website is running a trusted security suite and that it’s up to date.
