3 Essential Keys to Manage Your Kids and Your Business While Working from Home

Monday Morning Rocketfuel

🚀 If you’re a parent and a small business owner simultaneously, you’re going to have a lot of things going on at once! And with the unprecedented pandemic still affecting everyone, adjusting to working from home and having your kids at home is still a big deal.

As much as someone might wish they had a live-in tutor to occupy their kids’ time during the day, this isn’t 19th century England. So we’ve pulled together some tips to hopefully make your WFH situation a little easier!

Keep a routine!

Seems obvious right? But keeping a routine can help everyone, parents and kids, stay on track a little better. It doesn’t have to be a set-in-stone schedule either, but some basic layouts will help!

Some ideas to include in your schedule:

  • Breakfast time: when would you “normally” be eating breakfast?
  • Create a checklist for each kid based on their classwork or whatever their teachers have been able to provide for that week!
  • Work in break times! Let kids have the chance to go outside for a bit, exercise, play, or maybe read something for fun.
  • Try to have dinner together: whether that’s with a movie or show on or at the table.
  • Don’t forget to have your weekly scheduled Alien Break.

Be a role model.

As a parent, you’re probably a role model to your kids already! During the stressful time of working and schooling at home, you can continue to be a role model by some of the following.

  • Make sure to get plenty of sleep.
  • Have open conversations with your family about any concerns and anxieties.
  • Take breaks.
  • Stay connected with friends and family.

By setting a positive example for your kids and how you respond to the pandemic, you can help offset additional stress and anxiety that you may all be feeling in some ways.

Set up everyone’s workspaces!

Having a dedicated workspace can make all the difference for anyone. There are benefits to having a dedicated workspace at home, whether you’re a small business owner or a kid!

They can come in the form of being more creative, more productive, and generally having less distractions.

For both you and your kids, setting up a space that’s meant for work or schoolwork can be beneficial in the long run. If you’re all at home together working, things might end up getting messy if you’re all in one space.

No matter the size of your home, consider setting up a space for each member of the family. These can be created in a few ways.

  • Use fold-away tables so workspaces can be packed away.
  • Split up the dining room table.
  • Use lap desks if needed!
  • Set up a small desk for each kid if you have the space.

Taking steps to make working from home easier for everyone in the family can be a huge stress-reducer!
