Learning Opportunities at Work

There comes a time when many of us feel like we’re in a dead-end job. There’s nothing more to learn, nothing exciting to do, and nothing is making each day feel like a good one.

Maybe it is time for a career switch, or maybe we’re not looking in the right places for opportunities to grow.

According to a 2018 report by LinkedIn, 94% of employees reported they would stay at a company longer if they felt that company was investing in their career. But, the No. 1 reason why employees feel held back is because they don’t have time to learn.

Seems like between all the job tasks of a daily grind that a position requires and trying to achieve the perfect work-life balance, there’s not a whole lot of time for more learning.

TrainingIndustry.com looked into Fortune’s 2019 Top Companies to Work For and found that the top three companies had learning and development baked into the foundation of their employee workforce.

Hilton, an international hotel chain, was No. 1 on the list.

“Career growth and professional development is one of the most critical components of our team member experience,” says Gretchen Stroud, Hilton’s vice president of talent development, diversity and inclusion. “It is important that team members don’t just feel like they have a job but that they have a career with Hilton.”

Learning, either on the job, or through company-sponsored classes and training days, is one way that employees, and their bosses, can keep the ball rolling on career-building and employee retention.

Challenge

When you find yourself thinking you’re at a dead-end, seek out more opportunities to learn with your company.
